This was all I needed to keep me going and help me plan for next year..

This year in music there were things that I loved learning and others that I struggled with but they were all important.

Something that I loved learning was using the piano lab. It was a lot of fun because I had never even really thought that much about learning piano but I found that it was something I was really interested in. I also thought it was a good experience because it was very hands on.

Another thing that I liked was learning about the Native Americans. I loved learning about their culture, music, and dance. The activities that we did with the unit were fun, as well. I especially loved the dances that we made up. I liked that because there were no restrictions and we got to be creative.

One thing I struggled with was getting started on the Essay. Once I got started, it was not a problem but getting started was a little stressful. I think I just needed to ask for help, but in the end it all worked out!

More Reflections..

The best thing about music class was that we got to learn how to play and got to play the piano and that we got to learn about famous musicians and we got to listen to their music. And if I had to pick which was the best thing that we have done this year then I would say the pianos were the best thing that we have done this year. Then I think that it would be the pianos.

The worst thing that we have done during quarter 3 and 4 is having to do questions about Aaron Copland and Modest Mussorgsky. The hardest part about the projects were when we had to do Aaron Copland questions because we had to look through a paper that had all of the answers and if we went online then some of the information that you found would be wrong. And so that was really annoying. And the thing about the Modest Mussorgsky project is that you have to make a poster or a picture that Modest Mussorgsky drew. And you would have to add a lot of detail and then you would have to add color but you could color anyway you wanted if you didn’t have a picture in color but I think that it would have to be appropriate colors. Like if I drew a sky then you probably wouldn’t want it to be pink.

Reflection
In music this year I learned how to play the piano, I learned about Aaron Copland, and Mussorgsky. Playing the piano was hard at first but it got easier the more I practiced. When we learned about Aaron Copland I felt like it was pretty difficult to write a essay but when I got thinking it was really easy. When learning about Mussorgsky we got to answer questions so, we got to do research. We also got to draw a picture that was really fun. I had a lot of fun with Mrs. Frank. She taught me a lot. I am glad I had her as a music teacher. Mrs.Frank really pushes you hard so you do a really good job. She was really helpful when it came to my essay.

Peaks and Valleys

Today is the second to last day of school, and I am having my students work on reflections about their experiences in music class this year.  Here are some of the reflections.  I think they would rather be playing musical chairs, but I really would like to know what was hard for them, and what was fun and what was exciting and what was not so great about their musical journey in fifth grade.  We talked about peaks and valleys for them, and this is what they came up with so far...

Peaks: A peak for me in music class was learning to play piano because playing piano helped me with playing the violin at home at at school for lessons. Another peak was learning to read the bass clef because I have always wondered how bass and treble clef were different. During music I also enjoyed the drawing for Mussorgsky. I enjoyed this becuase I like to draw, and I liked how I could take the format of the picture, and make some parts my own.

Valleys: One valley during music was writing a piece on the piano because when I would write music on paper, some of it didn’t sound good on the piano, so I would edit it. The editing was more towards a peak I think, though. Another valley was the Aaron Copland essay because when I first started writing it, I didn’t know what to do. After some help though, I got it.

Reflection on music class

During music class, I learned about some composers and who they were. Aaron Copland was a very famous composer. The helped other musicians get better and eventually they become great composers. We also learned about Modest Mussorgsky. He had become inspired by pictures of his friends who had passed away. We also learned how to play the piano. It was fun to play. I wish I had my own piano at my house. Then I could enjoy practicing it all summer long! I loved doing music and I can’t wait to have music again next year.

Peaks and valleys
Music 2015-2016

Peaks; Some of the the peaks for me was the piano lab.Because it was a really great experience because I got to write my own song and perform it for Miss.Frank I also really liked studying notes but my favorite part was studying Mussorgsky.

Valleys; I did not have a lot of valleys this year. But one was writing a essay on Aaron Copland I don’t really like writing so that made it really hard. And learning C position.

This year my favorite part was when I drew pictures of chicken people.  The most difficult was probably the essay on Aaron Copland that was the hardest because we had to write a lot and read to find out information on Aaron Copland.  Learning the piano was fun even though it was hard. Over all this was a great year with you.

A different way of approaching this assignment..

The Life of Aaron Copland

On July 4, 1776, we declared our independence from Britain. This meant (though some of us didn’t know it) we no longer thought like britain, or acted like britain. We had stopped copying europe for most things, except in the arts. Things like art and literature we had explored, but in classical music, we were still depending on the europe tradition. This is where Aaron Copland comes into the view.

Aaron Copland was born in 1900. He was from Brooklyn, and his parents were jewish. His mom was and immigrant, and at age five she came to America and lived in the midwest throughout her childhood. She met Aaron’s father there and moved to New York to marry him. He emigrated when he was 16. Aaron had four siblings. His family had to work hard to have a good life in New York. His parents payed for Aaron’s siblings to have piano lessons, but not him. Aaron finally persuaded them to let him have piano lessons. He was very successful at the piano, and he learned quickly.

When he was in puplic school, he studied music theory and he went to concerts. His family offered to put him through college, but when he was 15 he knew his dream was to become a composer, so he declined their offer. Aaron wanted to go to a school in France called Fontainbleau. That school was for americans. With hard work at his father's store, and savings from his allowance money, and a scholarship from the school in 1921, Aaron headed off to France.

When he was in France he studied privately with one of the best teachers around, Nadia Boulanger. She was very talented musically, and Aaron worked hard. He thought that meeting Nadia was the most important moment of his life. Nadia had a concert in New York, and she wanted him to write a symphony for it. It took a lot of persuading, because he was nervous that the people wouldn’t like his music even though it was European tradition, like all music. He finally agreed, though, and the concert was successful. Then he returned to america, hoping to begin his life of fame.

Here comes Aaron Copland’s second big break back in america. A well known conductor named Koussevitzky performed Aaron’s piece. This brought more fame to Aaron. Kusevitsky supported aaron again by showing people Aaron’s other compositions for the next few decades.

Other european composers were starting to break with tradition, and others were reaching to their home country’s. Aaron was exposed to these ideas, but it took him a while to start doing it himself. 1925 through 1935 he put jazz elements into music similar to the music being played in europe.  He was troubled by the growing gap between the new, complex music and the general concert audience. He began to write music that was simpler, and more lyrical. One of the first of this kind of music that copland wrote was El Salon Mexico. He portrayed the atmosphere of mexican dance hall using energetic folk melodies. He followed that success and made many other compositions. He also made a play opera and many movie scores.

In his later life he played with 12-tone technique. Most of the time though, he organized performances for musicians follow in his footsteps, and he performed his pieces and personally helped people all around the world.

I love this exemplar because she really nailed the point of the essay!! Very thoughtful and connected to life in general..

Aaron Copland
By: Katie Brower

Aaron Copland was born in 1900 in Brooklyn, New York. Aaron Copland died at the age of 90. Aaron had a lot of other siblings to help him along the way.
The many thing that contributed to Aaron Copland’s success as a musician and composer was his parents let him take piano lessons after they saw his natural talent as a musician. The reason why he became a composer was because when he went to Paris he went to a place where there were people that wanted to learn about being a famous composer because they all wanted to be a famous composer.
The things that he had to do to become a musician and composer was he went to a public school and studied music theory privately. And by the time that he was 15 he knew exactly what he wanted to be. He wanted to be a music composer. But he refused his parents offer for sending him to college. He decided that he wanted to study Paris, the center of Western music.
The things that were given to him to help him along the way was his parents let Aaron take piano lessons after they saw his natural talent on the piano. And also he begged and begged his parents to take piano lessons because his parents let their 4 older children take lessons. And so he got a scholarship in 1921, and headed off to France. While he was in France he met this lady named Nadia Boulanger, a brilliant teacher. And she had an incredible musical gift. And with his family’s help Aaron go to stay in France to study privately with her for three more years.

Clearly he did have help from some other people. And we all need help with things in some point of our lives. And there is nothing wrong about asking for help. We all need it don’t be afraid to ask.

We all need it don't be afraid to ask. That is the best piece of advice of all time. If I had asked for help a long time ago, I think my life would have, maybe, taken a different path. Why was I always afraid to look stupid or ignorant? Why did I not ask all the times I needed to? For all of you out there, musicians or not, this is the most important piece of advice I could give you, and I would like to thank Katie for reminding me about this..out of the mouths of children, the wisest of all!!

Another Exemplar for Aaron Copland's essay on Success and the roles and requirements of being a musician

Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland was a great composer who was born in 1900 and spanned most of the twentieth century.  He created music that reflected our land and history.
Aaron Copland was named the leader of classical music for over 50 years.  This was because he helped young musicians and, helped them get along. But this does not just happen, Aaron worked very hard and did not give up. He also was the first to get accepted at a music school called Fontainebleau. He met many amazing composers and even got a scholarship! But he still worked very hard because it is a very good school.
Copland  had two really good breaks, one of them was meeting Nadia Boulanger, this was very special for Aaron, in fact he said it was the most important thing in his life.  The second big break was when Serge Koussevinsky, a very well known conductor gave the second performance of the work. But that's not the best part! The best part is that Serge continued to support Aaron by premiering a lot of Aaron Copland's compositions for the next few decades, talk about big breaks!
Aaron Copland unfortunately died December 2nd, 1990 because of respiratory insufficiency. This is a condition which the lungs can not take in sufficient oxygen or expel sufficient carbon dioxide to meet the needs of the cells of the body. Let's end on a happy note.
Aaron Copland was a very successful musician who lived his dreams and his story has made me think about my own experience as a musician.   I love writing songs and performing them. When I was little I would make little plays.  I would  make a costume and strum my guitar and just have a good time. Now it's a little harder at middle school, partly because peer pressure changes things.  Also, writing original songs is very difficult. I have a hard time coming up with the melodies but it’s all worth it in the end because I have a beautiful song that makes lots of people happy or maybe even cry. When I'm performing nothing else is on my mind all my struggles and problems just float away. I feel.. free and myself.
When I’m older I  am definitely going to University of North Texas College of Music. That is my dream anyway, and I will strive for it. But I couldn't do that without  my friends. They stay by my side no matter how insecure I feel or how lonely I feel.  No matter what they stick with me  and that is why they are my friends. From Aaron Copland, and from my experience, I hope you know also to follow your dreams.   Nothing is impossible.
